EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Erin Larner is the Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week and the third time this season the conference office announced Tuesday. It is the fifth such honor of her career.
The Portland, Oregon, native kept her undefeated Big Ten season in both singles and doubles going in leading the Wildcats to a pair of convincing home wins.
In Saturday's 7-0 win over Wisconsin, she teamed with Maddie Lipp in doubles as the nation's fourth-ranked duo earned a 6-3 victory. In singles action, after dropping the first three games of her match against Lexi Keberle, Larner bounced back to win 12 of the next 14 games to earn the victory.
The following day in a 6-1 win over Minnesota, Larner posted a pair of dominant wins. In doubles, she paired with Lipp for a 6-0 shutout before surrendering only two games to Caroline Ryba in a 6-1, 6-1 win as the Wildcats improved to a perfect 10-0 in Big Ten play.
Ranked No. 39 in the nation in singles by the ITA this week, Larner is a perfect 9-0 against Big Ten foes this season and 15-1 in dual match play overall. In doubles, she's ranked No. 4 nationally alongside Lipp and also is undefeated (8-0) against conference opponents and 14-2 overall in dual match competition.
Northwestern (17-4, 9-0 B1G) wraps up its regular season this weekend with matches at Penn State on Friday and Ohio State on Sunday. With one win or a loss by Michigan, the Wildcats will clinch at least a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.
