EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern Director of Performance Nutrition Katie Knappenberger was elected to the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association (CPSDA) Board of Directors, as voted on by the organization's membership, made up of her peers of fellow sports dietitians.
The membership identified Knappenberger's leadership ability, continued excellence in the field of dietetics, and a strong commitment to improving athlete health and wellness. She was chosen as one of nine board members to lead CPSDA through the identification, execution and management of organizational goals.
"The opportunity to serve on the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association Board of Directors gives me the platform to connect with the nation's best and brightest in performance nutrition," said Knappenberger. "This not only provides avenues to advocate for the health, safety, and optimal performance of athletes nation-wide but directly enhances the work we can do here at Northwestern."
"On behalf of the Northwestern University sports medicine department, I want congratulate Katie on her election to the CPSDA Board of Directors," said Northwestern Director of Sports Medicine and Head Team Physician Jeff Mjaanes, MD. "Her peers have recognized what we Wildcats have seen all along: a leader in her field, who is committed to furthering the profession and to improving the health and well-being of our student-athletes. We are so proud of Katie for receiving this honor."
CPSDA represents the vast majority of advanced practice registered dietitians in the United States who work full-time with athletes in colleges, professional sports, Olympic training centers, the U.S. Military and in law enforcement. CPSDA is a member-driven national not-for-profit organization that speaks with one voice on behalf of America's leading sports dietitians. CPSDA is founded on the fundamental "food first" principle that "whole foods are the best fuel," and that athletic programs operating at every level of competition will best serve their athletes when employing the services of a full-time sports dietitian.
Knappenberger joined Northwestern in June of 2014 and has since built one of the most well-respected performance nutrition programs in all of intercollegiate athletics. She is responsible for team and staff education, meal planning, individual nutrition counseling and food and supplement security.
Knappenberger, who earned her bachelor's degree in athletic training from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and her master's degree in nutrition with emphasis in sports dietetics from the University of Utah, is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Athletic Trainer who is actively involved in the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association (CPSDA), the Sports Cardiovascular and Wellness Dietetic Practice Group (SCAN), the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA).
