EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern kicks off its spring season this weekend at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday and the Stanford Invitational on Sunday.
The majority of the Wildcats will be running at the meet traditionally hosted by San Francisco State, but due to track issues, the event will take place at Chabot College. Sophomore Aubrey Roberts will run a 5K at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday evening.
At Chabot College, Andrea Ostenso and Haley Albers will start first for the 'Cats in the 10K scheduled for 10 a.m. Kelly O'Brien and Sara Coffey are slated to run in the 1500M next, while Isabel Seidel will take on the 3000M Steeplechase in the early afternoon. Sarah Nicholson, Amanda Davis, Brooke Pignieri and Hannah Tobin will all compete in the 5K in the early evening.
"We've been in San Diego training since Saturday evening and the women have had some good workouts and have enjoyed the sunshine and warmer temperatures," Assistant Coach Austin Brobst said. "Both race options this weekend have traditionally produced fast times, and last year the team ran well at San Francisco State so we are looking for similar performances. We are looking for the women to go out and compete well in their respective heat and have fun."
Last year at the same event, O'Brien set the school record in the 1500M with a 4:31.04. Four 'Cats ran top-ten times in program history, including Coffey's eighth best mark of 4:37.16.
Nicholson finished the 5000M at the meet in 17:02.58, good for a top-25 finish in the 149-person field and the seventh fastest time in Northwestern history.
The last time out for Ostenso and Albers was a successful one, with Ostenso winning the 3000M at the Alex Wilson Invitational with a 9:49.08 and Albers finishing in seventh with a personal record of 10:24.22.
Last year at the Dr. Keeler invitational, Seidel won the event with the fastest 3000M steeplechase in school history, clocking in at 10:31.22.
Roberts last competed at the Boston University last chance meet, where she set the school record in the 3000M event with a 9:21.32. In Roberts' last 5K at the Husky Classic, she finished in 16:32.75.
Davis and Tobin competed for the USA Track and Field Junior Team at the North American. Central American and Caribbean Cross Country Championships in February after posting top-ten finishes at the USA Track and Field Cross Country Championships in the 6K.
Pignieri last ran at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in October, when she finished the 6K in 23:34.0.
