Northwestern's Offense Explodes to Beat Judson, 11-1

3/11/2018 5:04:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern exploded for ten runs on ten hits in the first three innings as it downed Judson, 11-1, at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park on Sunday afternoon.

Northwestern (5-7) continues to defend Miller Park, having won 12 of its last 15 home contests. Nine Wildcats reached base a total of 16 times.

Jack Dunn led the way with a pair of hits, scoring three runs, driving in a pair, and adding two stolen bases. Willie Bourbon also scored three runs, while Charlie Maxwell had three RBI singles.

Jack Pagliarini was lights out on the mound. The southpaw from Springboro, Ohio, struck out a career-high eight, while scattering three hits over six innings. In a stretch starting in the third, he struck out six of seven batters, while retiring eight straight. With his eight strikeout performance, Pagliarini now has averaged 13.85 strikeouts per nine innings, the top mark in the Big Ten.

Despite the change to daylight savings time last night, Northwestern was awake and ready for first pitch today and jumped out on the Eagles in the first inning with five quick runs. Dunn, Erro, and Bourbon loaded the bases, when Jack Claeys doubled and Charlie Maxwell tripled, each driving in a pair. Maxwell would come in to score on a wild pitch.

The Wildcats' bats continued to roll in the second when Dunn got things started with a single. He stole second, and then third, coming in on an Erro sac fly. Bourbon got on again, advanced on a Claeys single, before coming in on Maxwell's single to make it 7-0 after two.

Judson put one on the board in the top of the third, but Northwestern continued to put runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. Casey O'Laughlin and Ben Dickey reached base, and Dunn got his turn to drive runners in, plating both with a single. Erro doubled, moving Dunn to third, when he put the Wildcats into double digits by scoring on a wild pitch.

Danny Katz relieved Pagliarini in the seventh, and continued to shut down the Eagles bats. He retired all six batters he faced, striking out three. Josh Levy pitched the ninth, striking out all three batters he faced. Northwestern's twelve strikeouts on the day were the most they've had in a game since striking out 13 against Milwaukee last March.

The Wildcats return to action with three games at Central Michigan on March 16-17 in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
