Wildcats Take Home Opener Against MacMurray

3/10/2018 5:03:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. –  Northwestern cruised to a 6-3 victory over MacMurray on Saturday in the home opener at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park as Hank Christie fanned six batters in six scoreless innings and nine Wildcats reached base.

The Wildcats (4-7) have won four straight at home, as well as 11 out of their last 14. Northwestern entered the game second in the Big Ten with 24 steals, and continued their aggressive play with five steals against MacMurray (2-7).

Alex Erro led the way with a single and a pair of walks, with Ben Dickey and Jack Dunn each chipping in a hit, scoring once and twice respectively.

Christie had a gem on the mound, scattering three hits over six innings without allowing a run. Starting in the second inning, he retired seven straight batters, striking out four.

Tommy Bordignon earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Northwestern got their bats working quickly, with Dickey getting on, stealing a base and scoring to give Northwestern the lead after just three batters.

The Dickey and Dunn show was recording live in the third, with back-to-back singles to start the inning. Erro followed with a walk, before Willie Bourbon brought home one run with a walk, and Connor Lind extended the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly.

Northwestern continued to stretch their lead in the fourth, with Jack Claeys singling and eventually scoring on a Kyle Burnett, Jr. sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Dickey and Dunn got on base again in the sixth, loading the bases after a Burnett Jr. walk. Erro hit a chopper up the middle, but beat the throw to the bag to prevent a double play and knock in a run.

Richard Fordon replaced Christie to start the seventh. The senior lefty gave up just one earned in two innings, as MacMurray pulled back into striking distance at 5-3.

Connor Lind put padding back into the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring the Wildcats sixth run after singling to start the frame.

Bordignon came in to pitch the ninth, coming on the back of his three-inning masterpiece at Texas, where he struck out five while allowing no hits. He replicated the performance at Miller Park, blowing past the first batter faced for a strike out, and inducing weak contact to quickly earn his second save of the season.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action tomorrow at Miller Park when it welcomes Judson to town. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
