Wildcat Defense Swarm Shockers in Duel in the Desert Win

LAS VEGAS, NV. - The Wildcat defense forced 23 turnovers in a 65-43 victory over Wichita State Wednesday night inside Cox Pavilion at UNLV in game one of Duel in the Desert.
Northwestern fired on all cylinders in the first quarter, starting with a deep three from first year Veronica Burton to begin the game on a 20-0 run. Northwestern's swarming defensive effort recorded 10 blocks and forced the Shockers 23 turnovers, the second most from any opponent this season.
Northwestern was led by junior Abi Scheid with 13 points going 4-8 from the arc and a perfect 3-3 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Lindsey Pulliam contributed ten points, marking her ninth consecutive double-digit scoring game this season.
Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah and Veronica Burton posted nine points each. Kunaiyi-Akpanah pulled down eight rebounds and recorded four blocks for the second straight game this season.
As a team, ten Wildcats contributed in Wednesday's win and shot 64% from the free throw line.
Next up for the Northwestern are the Kansas Jayhawks to claim the Desert Division. The Jayhawks defeated the Washington State Cougars 71-63. Tip off for that game is set for 5:00 pm PST.
