Wildcats Prepped For Competitive CKLV Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern will travel out west this weekend to take part in the 2018 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational. Competition will begin Friday morning and will continue throughout the day on both Friday and Saturday.
The Wildcats are coming off a victory over No. 10 Virginia Tech in the home opener at the New Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday, Nov. 18. NU got wins from Sebastian Rivera, Yahya Thomas, Shayne Oster, Ryan Deakin, Johnny Sebastian and Conan Jennings to seal a 20-16 decision over the Hokies.
Rivera, ranked second in the nation, won by major decision in the opening bout to give the hosts an early 4-0 lead. At 149, Oster took down then-No. 13 Ryan Blees in the tiebreaker to stretch the lead to seven team points. With the contest knotted at 16 entering the final bout, Jennings cruised to a 12-0 major decision that sealed the win for Chicago's Big Ten Team. The victory was the first over a top-ten team for the 'Cats since February of 2008.
The CKLV Invitational will feature an impressive field of 42 teams, including 15 of the 25 currently ranked in the NWCA Coaches' Poll. Five of the top ten and nine of the top 15 squads in the nation will be on display. The tournament as a whole will include over 100 ranked grapplers, including all seven NU wrestlers currently slotted inside the top 20 of their respective weight classes by FloWrestling.
The action is set to begin with the opening round at 9 a.m. PT/11 a.m. CT Friday morning. The opening day will conclude with the championship quarterfinals and first consolation round at 6 p.m. PT/8 p.m. CT. The second consolation round will start things off on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. PT/11 a.m. CT, with the championship finals scheduled for 3 p.m. PT/5 p.m. CT on Saturday afternoon.
