TYR Invitational Results - Day 1
The Wildcats wrapped up their first day of competition at the TYR Invitational with commanding first-place leads Friday at the Norris Aquatics Center. The women's team finished up with 483.5 points, while the men's team led with 387 points.
The women's squad was not satisfied with just a 242-point lead, setting two school records in the process. Sophomore phenom Calypso Sheridan swam the fastest 200 IM in Wildcat history with an NCAA 'B' cut and pool-record time of 1:56.64. Junior Malorie Han, sophomore Sophie Angus, and first-year Miriam Guevara joined Sheridan in the fun, as the four women broke an 18-year record on their way to swimming the fastest 400 medley relay in Northwestern history with a pool-record time of 3:34.89.
Northwestern wasted no time in getting the weekend started. Friday morning's preliminaries saw five first place qualifiers for the women's team and two for the men. Sheridan tallied the team's first NCAA 'B' cut time of the day in the 200 IM prelim, topping off a 1-5 Northwestern sweep of the table.
The women's 200 free relay team of Han, Jasmine Hellmer, Krystal Lara and Nicole Aarts kicked off the night's finals with a first place finish and season-best time of 1:31.48. The men's team of Will Hofstadter, Andrew Zhang, Ryan Gridley and Ezra Mizgala added 34 points to their total in the 200 free relay, barely missing on first by just six hundredths of a second.
The women kept the points rolling in with a 1-2 finish in the 50 breast. First-year Tara Vovk claimed the victory, while Angus touched the wall just behind her.
Sophomore Rachel Tseng put in a top-ten all-time performance for the Wildcats in the 500 free, finishing first with a career-best time of 4:49.00. The men followed suit, claiming the top two spots in the 500 free. Sophomore Liam Gately took the top spot with a career-best time of 4:25.23, while sophomore DJ Hwang also notched a career-best time of 4:28.41 en route to a second place finish.
Both the women and men took the top two spots in the 50 back. Guevara and junior Krystal Lara finished 1-2 for the women, while first-years Ryan Gridley and Andrew Zhang matched them.
Following Sheridan's school record, three other 'Cats closed out the top four spots in the 200 IM. Vovk, sophomore Ilektra Lebl and senior Alex Grimes finished second, third, and fourth, respectively. Vovk's time of 1:59.58 was good enough to earn an NCAA 'B' cut.
For one more top-ten performance, Han won the 50 free with a career-high time of 22.92.
Back-to-back B1G Diver of the Week Olivia Rosendahl continued her reign over the diving boards, taking home the 3M crown with a season-high 352.45 points. Teammate Eryn Scannell followed right behind, finishing second with a score of 308.10. First-year Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson made his bid for the diving title with his second first-place finish of the year in the 1M.
Closing out the first day, the men's 400 medley relay team followed up the women's record with another win. Gridley, Hofstadter, A. Zhang, and senior Ryan Tate grabbed the top spot with a season-best time of 3:15.58.
The 'Cats return to the pool for day two of TYR tomorrow at 9 a.m. for the preliminaries, and 5 p.m. for the finals.
