Evanston, Ill. – Northwestern Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe McKeown has named senior Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah, junior Abi Scheid and sophomore Lindsey Pulliam as team captains for the 2018-19 season.
"We are really excited about our 2018-19 captains. They bring out great leadership and respect from their teammates and coaching staff." McKeown said. "Pallas has earned everything she has done at Northwestern through hard work and leading by example. As a returning captain, Abi has an understanding of what it takes to be successful at Northwestern and in the Big Ten both on and off the court. Lindsey Pulliam, even as a sophomore has built in leadership qualities that will help our team compete better everyday."
From Abuja, Nigeria, Kunaiyi-Akpanah has already received multiple preseason honors heading into the upcoming season. The senior forward totaled 381 rebounds last year which ranks her second in the Big Ten and first in Northwestern history for total rebounds in a season. She is also ranked in the conference for offensive rebounds, steals, blocked shots and scoring.
Abi Scheid is in her second year as captain as a junior. The Minnesota native is ranked fifth in the Big Ten in minutes played with an average of 35.3 per game and has been a reliable piece of the Wildcat offense. Last season, Scheid scored double-digit points in 23 of 31 games and returns with a field goal percentage of .836.
Sophomore Lindsey Pulliam is in her first year as captain after an impressive rookie season. Joining the Wildcats from Silver Springs, Maryland, Pulliam led the team in scoring with 15.0 points per game, the highest among first year players in the Big Ten. Her 18 points against Chicago State were the most points scored in a Northwestern debut since Nia Coffey in 2014.
The Wildcats will play an exhibition on Sunday, November 4 at 2 p.m. at the new Welsh-Ryan arena before officially starting their season on the road against Green Bay, November 6.
Northwestern's home opener is Sunday, November 11 against Duke. Tip off for that game is set for 1 p.m.
