EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern student-athletes shattered the school record for fall quarter GPA with a 3.31 mark in 2017, it was announced Tuesday.
"This is our most important highlight from a fall season that saw two of our teams advance in NCAA postseason play and a 10-win football program winning the Music City Bowl," said Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "It's a credit to the dedication our young men and women display in the classroom, the coaches that brought them to Northwestern knowing they were capable of excellence, and the expectation of success and foundation of developmental support provided by our staff. This academic success is an enormous point of pride for the entire Wildcats community."
All 19 Wildcats teams earned GPAs over 3.00 during the fall quarter, with the average team mark at 3.32. This is the seventh consecutive quarter in which the team average has topped 3.30.
Among those nineteen programs, women's golf led the way with a 3.68 team GPA, while lacrosse (3.58) and women's swimming and diving (3.50) rounded out the top three. Thirty student-athletes posted perfect 4.00 GPAs during the quarter.
Chicago's Big Ten Team earned 97 Academic All-Big Ten selections during the fall. In addition to its third 10-win season in the last six years, Northwestern football accounted for a program-record 43 of the Academic All-Big Ten selections. The squad finished the fall quarter with a 3.16 GPA, the highest in-season mark ever for the program.
In November, it was announced that Northwestern earned a 97 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR), the best mark in the Big Ten and the second-best among all FBS institutions nationally. The football program's 99 percent GSR is the top score among all FBS institutions in the country and paces the Big Ten conference by 14 percentage points.
Last year, Northwestern student-athletes took home a record 245 Academic All-Big Ten awards, the fourth straight in which the group broke its own record.
