Northwestern Trounces No. 21 Kentucky in ITA Kick-Off Opener

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Northwestern's women's tennis team had little trouble taking care of 21st-ranked and host Kentucky Friday morning on the opening day of competition of ITA Kick-Off Weekend as the Wildcats from Evanston rolled to a 4-0 victory.
Kentucky was the top-seeded team at the Lexington site, but Northwestern cruised to the victory and will face No. 16 UCLA -- a 4-0 winner over NC State -- at noon CT Saturday for the right to advance to the ITA National Indoor Team Championships.
Featuring a pair of top-10 nationally ranked doubles teams, NU was dominant in securing the first point of the match. The duo of Rheeya Doshi and Julie Byrne were the first to capture a victory in doubles, winning 6-2 at No. 3 while the eighth-ranked team of Alex Chatt and Lee Or rolled to a 6-1 win at No. 2, putting the 'Cats up 1-0 in the match.
The Boone Tennis Complex only features four courts, so singles play began with matches at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Northwestern claimed the first set in all four of the matches and first-year Inci Ogut was the first to finish things off as she topped Lesedi Jacobs 6-3, 6-2, giving NU a 2-0 lead in the match.
No. 92 Maddie Lipp finished off a win of her own moments later as she defeated Mami Adachi, 6-3, 6-4. Erin Larner then had the honor of closing out the match, taking down Emily Fanning in straight sets as well at No. 2, winning 6-3, 6-2.
The win improves Northwestern to 3-0 this season while Kentucky falls to 2-1. NU is seeking its first berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships since 2014 and can earn its spot with a victory on Saturday, with the match getting underway at noon Central time.
