EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern wrapped up nonconference play on Sunday at Martin Stadium with a close 1-0 loss to Pepperdine, a team receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches' top-25 poll.
The Wildcats got off nine shots, four of which were on goal, but it was Pepperdine that snuck one across the line for the match's only score.
The Waves' Christina Settles scored unassisted in the 26th minute on a shot that hit off goalkeeper Lauren Clem's fingers and rolled across the line.
Northwestern finished the nonconference slate with a 3-3-1 mark and will now begin the process of defending its Big Ten title.
Junior Michele Chernesky and first-year Madi Kennel led the way with two shots apiece. Both of Kennel's were on goal but saved. Seven Wildcats took shots in all, but Pepperdine goalkeeper Brielle Preece made four saves for a clean sheet.
