EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern assistant coach Jason Welch has been named the head coach of San Francisco State's wrestling program, the Gators announced Monday.
"I could not be happier for Jason," said Northwestern head coach Matt Storniolo. "Not only does this give him the opportunity to run his own program, but he gets to do it just miles from his hometown. Family is extremely important to the Welches, and I am sure they are thrilled to have him back in California."
Welch was a three-time All-American at Northwestern (2011, 2012, 2013) and was a national runner-up and a Big Ten Champion in his final season in Evanston (2013).
"Jason was one of the most exciting wrestlers to ever don the purple singlet, and it was an honor to coach him for most of his collegiate and senior campaigns," said Storniolo. "He was a fierce competitor and I expect him to be no different in his new role. We wish him the best of luck."
San Francisco State is the only Division II wrestling program in California. Welch, a Walnut Creek, California, native becomes the 10th head coach in SFSU history, replacing Lars Jensen, a 34-year head coach for the Gators.
