Mao Earns WGCA All-American Scholar Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. – Wildcats rising junior Janet Mao has been selected as a 2017 Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar, the WGCA announced on Wednesday. This is the second straight year Mao, a neuroscience major at Northwestern University, has earned the prestigious recognition.
Earlier this spring, the Johns Creek, Georgia, native received Academic All-Big Ten laurels in her first year of eligibility, and earned All-Big Ten accolades for the second consecutive season.
Mao was Northwestern's top finisher during the stroke play portion of the 2017 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, locking up a 13th-place result to lead the Wildcats to an eight-shot win over their closest competition after 54 holes at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
She delivered one of the signature moments of a remarkable season with a clinching putt in the match play semifinals against Southern California, sending the 'Cats into the 2017 NCAA Match Play Championship. Last week she earned an invitation to the 2017 United States Women's Amateur Championship in Chula Vista, California, her second straight berth in the nation's top amateur event.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics, with a minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50. The Women's Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches. The WGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the WGCA represents over 600 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
