CARMEL, Calif. -- Wildcats rising sophomore Brooke Riley earned a 2&1 victory over Ziyi Wang to capture the 2017 Calfornia Women's Amateur Championship at Quail Lodge.
Riley carded an even par 72 on the first day of stroke competition, and followed it up with a sizzling 4-under 68 to finish the stroke play portion of the event in third-place, just a shot out of the top spot. Entering the 32-player match play brack as the No. 3 seed, the Manteca, California, native knocked off Madison Daniel 6&5, defeated Jessica Luo 4&3, eliminated Simar Singh 2&1 and took down Kathleen Scavo 5&3 in the semifinals to advance to Saturday's championship match.

The four-time Valley Oak League MVP at East Union High School, who hadn't trailed in any match since the Round of 16, again put her foot on the gas pedal and never let up. A birdie on the opening par-5 1st and par wins on hole Nos. 3, 5 and 8 gave her a quick 4-up lead before she withstood a furious challenge from Wang, a sophomore at Stanford, and clinched the title by halving the Par-3 17th.
"It's pretty surreal," said Riley, who joins the likes of World Golf Hall of Famers Amy Alcott and Juli Inkster as champions of the event. "The field had some amazing names and the trophy has some amazing names on it." Alcott, who won the title in 1973, was on hand to help present Riley the trophy afterwards.
