EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern University, the City of Evanston, and Dynegy Inc. held a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 17 to unveil the renovated Twiggs Park basketball court.

The court underwent a renovation this summer as a result of a partnership between the three that included repairs to the basketball court playing surface, replacement of the backboards and rims, repainting of basketball lines, and application of a new textured acrylic surface with custom Northwestern and Dynegy Inc. logos and lettering.

Northwestern Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips, Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins and Alderman Rue Simmons each addressed the crowd at the event. Student-athletes from both the Northwestern men's and women's basketball programs were on hand as well.

"The partnership between the City of Evanston, Dynegy, and Northwestern University has turned this court into something all of us in the community can be proud of, and a place where our children can fall in love with the game of basketball," said Phillips.

Children from the Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center's summer camp and the Garrett-Evanston CDF Freedom Schools Program took part in basketball activities following the ceremony.

"I am grateful to be part of this community," said Collins. "A community where the people involved recognize how important it is to provide opportunities for our youth."

Dynegy Inc. sponsors a "Community Group of the Game" at Northwestern football and men's basketball games throughout the year. This program provides an opportunity for non-profit groups and schools to attend games by providing admission tickets, food, t-shirts, hats and an opportunity to make a presentation on the field or court.

The renovated basketball court is located in the northeast section of Twiggs Park, just north of the intersection of Dewey Avenue and Payne Street.
