Deakin, Brewer To Compete in UWW World Team Trials

EVANSTON, Ill. — Freshman Ryan Deakin and volunteer assistant coach Cody Brewer are competing in the UWW Freestyle World Team Trials in Lincoln, Nebraska, June 9-10.

Deakin, wrestling at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., is vying for one of eight spots on the U.S. Junior World Team, which will compete at the UWW Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland, August 1-6.

The UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials features the best 17- to 20-year-old men's freestyle wrestlers in the nation, including both college underclassmen and high school wrestlers. Historically, top UWW Junior stars have proceeded to win World and Olympic medals in senior level competitions.

The Broomfield, Colorado, native qualified for the event at the Devaney Center after finishing atop the UWW Junior Nationals in Las Vegas. He came from behind and defeated two-time Cadet World Champion Yianni Diakomihalis in the semifinals and then proceeded to defeat Kanen Storr of Iowa State in the championship match, 8-6.

Deakin, who wrestled unattached this season, registered a 19-4 record. At the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, he notched a third-place finish after wins over No. 13 Davion Jeffries, No. 15 Jordan Laster, No. 19 Andrew Crone, and then-No. 18 Joey Delgado.

He will wrestle on Friday, June 9. Action begins at 10 a.m. CT with the preliminaries, quarterfinals, semifinals, consolations, consolation semifinals, and finals. Starting at 5 p.m., the best-of-three Championships Series will take place.

Brewer, wrestling at 61 kg/134 lbs., is seeking to earn one of the eight spots on the U.S. World Team, which will compete in the World Wrestling Championships in Paris, France, August 21-26.

Preliminaries, quarterfinals, semifinals, challenge finals, and consolations begin at 10 a.m CT. Final World Team Trials begin at 6 p.m. CT.

In his collegiate career, the Kansas City, Missouri, native was a four-time All-American for Oklahoma and finished with a 95-22 record.

He finished fourth in the U.S. Open to qualify for these Trials and finished fourth at his weight in 2016. In 2012, he was a UWW Junior Nationals runner up.
