Schieber Earns Will To Live Foundation's Life Teammates Award

EVANSTON, Ill. — Senior Jake Schieber earned the 2017 Paul Stevens Life Teammates Award, head coach Spencer Allen and The Will To Live Foundation announced earlier this spring.
 
The award, which is named after longtime Northwestern baseball coach Paul Stevens, is given annually to a senior in the program that demonstrates leadership on and off the field.
 
The Will To Live Foundation was founded by former major league pitcher and Northwestern baseball alumnus John Trautwein. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing teen suicide by improving the lives and the 'Will To Live' of teenagers everywhere through education about mental health and encouraging them to recognize the love and hope that exists in each other.
 
Every student-athlete on the roster voted for one senior who demonstrated the following 'Life Teammate' Criteria:
 
        • Is a leader on and off the field and understands his role as a leader before, during and after the game -   whether it be on the field, in the dugout, the locker room, classroom or in the community        
        • Is an ambassador of not only the program and the team, but of the game itself
        • Is respected by his peers, coaches, umpires, teachers, parents as well as teammates and opposing players
        • Is a true mentor to the underclassmen, motivating, inspiring and caring for the under-classmen athletes in the NU Baseball program
        • Displays true care for his teammates – always putting "team above self" while always trying hard to help struggling teammates find the good – on and off the field
        • Loves the game – Loves being on the team – Loves his teammates and exemplifies it
 
Schieber played in over 150 games during his Northwestern career and was as sure-handed as they came in the outfield. The Wheaton, Illinois, native boasted a .988 career fielding percentage and posted four-error free seasons in his career. Schieber. The Wildcats' center fielder had career-bests in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage in his senior season.
 
Schieber graduated from Northwestern in June of 2016 with a degree in communication studies and is earning his master's in sports administration.
