Deakin Dominates, Earns Spot On U.S. Junior World Team

LINCOLN, Neb. Ryan Deakin (66 kg/145.5 lbs.) claimed a spot on the on the prestigious U.S. Junior World Team after earning the Trials championship in dominating fashion.

The winner of the Junior Freestyle National Championship in April, Deakin earned an automatic bye to the best-of-three finals. He faced off against the winner of the 21-wrestler field, Patricio Lugo of Edinboro.

He made quick work of his competition. Deakin defeated Lugo with a 9-2 decision in the first-round robin match and then proceeded to beat Lugo in the second round via tech fall, 10-0 (5:12), to earn a spot on the elite U.S. Junior World Team.

In all, Deakin outscored Lugo, who earned a 31-9 record for Edinboro last season, by a 19-2 margin.

The Broomfield, Colorado, native now owns one of only eight spots on the team that will compete at the UWW Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland, August 1-6.

The team features the best 17- to 20-year-old men's freestyle wrestlers in the nation, including both college underclassmen and high school wrestlers. Historically, UWW Junior stars have proceeded to win World and Olympic medals in senior level competitions.

This U.S. Junior World Team Trials championship is yet another accomplishment for the first-year student-athlete.

In order to win the Junior Freestyle National Championship in April and earn his automatic bye, he topped two-time Cadet World Champion Yianni Diakomihalis and then defeated Kanen Storr of Iowa State.

Wrestling unattached this season, he registered a 19-4 record and notched a third-place finish at the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships after wins over No. 13 Davion Jeffries, No. 15 Jordan Laster, No. 19 Andrew Crone, and then-No. 18 Joey Delgado.

Volunteer assistant coach Cody Brewer is wrestling in the 61 kg/134 lbs. bracket on Saturday, looking to earn a spot on the U.S. Senior World Team.
