EVANSTON, Ill. — For the fourth consecutive year, Northwestern has broken its school record for Academic All-Big Ten awards, the Conference announced on Wednesday. The Wildcats finished the 2016-17 year with a total of 245 student-athletes receiving the recognition.
"In the midst of a tremendous year of achievement in competition, our young men and women have been even more impressive in the classroom," said Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "The academic commitment displayed by all 19 of our teams, from the student-athletes to the coaches to the support staff, is the most critical element of the Northwestern experience. The continued success of our nearly 500 young men and women academically, socially and athletically is a tremendous source of pride for the entire Northwestern community."
In data released Wednesday by the Big Ten Conference, 86 Wildcats earned spring and at-large Academic All-Big Ten recognition. Combined with the 99 awards captured in the fall and 60 in the winter, the 2016-17 academic year marks the seventh straight in which the 'Cats have topped 200 total honors.
Eight Northwestern sports are eligible for spring awards. Highlighting the list this year are women's golf and women's tennis, as all of their eligible student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors. To be eligible for an Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution carrying a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Earlier this month the NCAA announced that ten Wildcats varsity programs own the nation's top Academic Progress Rate (APR) in their respective sports, including Northwestern football. During the fall the 'Cats scored a 97 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR), a figure which leads the Big Ten by seven percentage points and ranks among the best in the nation.
The conference office will also present the Distinguished Scholar Award in July. Qualifying students must be in at least their second year at their institution while earning at least a 3.7 GPA for the 2016-17 academic year.
