EVANSTON, Ill. – Ten Northwestern varsity athletic programs have been awarded Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards, the NCAA announced on Wednesday.

"These programs achieve at a high level year-after-year because our coaches recruit student-athletes that want to be elite in the classroom," said Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "Our young men and women are here to earn the best degree in college athletics, and continue to make Northwestern proud academically, socially and athletically."

Northwestern's baseball, field hockey, football, men's soccer, softball, women's basketball, cross country, women's golf, women's soccer and volleyball programs earned the honor by placing in the top-10 percent of their respective sports in the latest multi-year APR scores. For the sixth straight year, more than half of Northwestern's 19 varsity programs received the honor.

Wildcats men's soccer, women's golf and volleyball are among an elite group of 93 teams from across the country that have received the Public Recognition Award in each of the 12 years of the program.

The APR multi-year rates span the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate.  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 10.
