BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Northwestern's Joe Hoscheit was named First Team All-Big Ten and right-handed pitcher Hank Christie earned All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
Hoscheit's senior campaign has been one for the record books. In conference games this season, Hoscheit led the league in batting average (.468), hits (44), doubles (10) and RBI (29). His .468 clip in league play is the highest average by a Big Ten player since the 1998 season.
"It's a great honor and I can't thank my coaches, teammates, family, and friends enough for the support they have shown me throughout this year," said Hoscheit. "Most importantly, though, we've achieved one of our goals in making the Big Ten Tournament and I can't be more excited to compete for a Big Ten championship this week.
The St. Charles, Illinois, native finished the regular season as Northwestern's leader in batting average (.356), hits (63), home runs (5), slugging percentage (.537) and on-base percentage (.430). Hoscheit earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks (April 17 and April 24) this season – first Wildcat player to accomplish that since Dan Brauer did so in 2006.
Hoscheit is the first Northwestern baseball player to earn All-Big Ten First Team honors since the 2010 season.
Christie had a breakout rookie campaign. The right-hander finished the season with a 5-4 record and 3.82 ERA, but was 4-1 (3.12 ERA) in league games. The Oak Park, Illinois, native posted team-highs in innings pitched (77.2) and strikeouts (49).
"This honor is definitely something to be proud of, but even more, it's something to build off of," said Christie. "We caught fire as a team halfway through the season and I was lucky enough to ride that wave of good baseball."
Christie was impressive down the final stretch of the Wildcats' season. In his final six starts of the campaign, Christie owned a 4-0 record, 1.54 ERA in 41.0 innings pitched. He boasted a 21:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in those games.
The league recognized Christie on March 6 with Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after he tossed a complete game against Santa Clara, holding the Broncos to one run on six hits, while striking out four and allowing no walks.
Christie is the first Northwestern player to be named to the league's All-Freshman Team since Grant Peikert earned the honor in 2015.
In addition, senior Cooper Wetherbee was recognized as Northwestern's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient for 2017.
Northwestern is the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Conference Tournament and will take on second-seeded Michigan on Wednesday, May 24 at 12:30 p.m. CT. The Big Ten Network will carry the tournament's action.
