ATLANTA -- No. 39 Northwestern saw its 2017 season come to an end Sunday afternoon, falling 4-0 to eighth-ranked Georgia Tech in a second-round NCAA tournament matchup.
The Wildcats complete their season with a 15-12 record.
NU put a big scare into the Yellow Jackets early on as they were on the verge of capturing the doubles point. Georgia Tech got a 6-1 win at No. 1, but Northwestern's No. 3 team of Rheeya Doshi and senior Jillian Rooney posted a 6-3 victory, leaving doubles to be decided by the match at No. 2.
Erin Larner and Lee Or surged out to a 5-2 lead against the 23rd-ranked team of Rasheeda McAdoo and Johnnise Renaud, but Yellow Jackets duo rallied back to take the final five games and put the hosts up 1-0 in the match.
Georgia Tech took the momentum of the comeback victory into singles play. The Yellow Jackets got straight-sets wins from Kenya Jones at No. 4, Nami Otsuka at No. 5 and the clincher from 96th-ranked Paige Hourigan at No. 3 to allow Georgia Tech to advance to the round of 16 in nearby Athens, Georgia.
Sunday's match completed the Northwestern careers of Rooney and fellow senior Brooke Rischbieth.
With the team portion of the season complete, Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp will represent Northwestern at the NCAA Doubles Championship next week in Athens.
