No. 11 Northwestern Beats No. 3 Alabama in Quad Match

GLENCOE, Ill. – In the final regular season tune up before NCAA regionals begin in a week, No. 11 Northwestern beat No. 3 Alabama on a cold, rainy day at Lakeshore Country Club. The Wildcats edged the Crimson Tide, 3.5-2.5.

The teams will see each other again May 8-10 in the Athens Regional. Alabama is the region's No. 1 seed, while Northwestern is No. 3.

Duke and Florida State were also involved in Saturday's quad match, with the No. 9 Blue Devils winning 4-1 over No. 5 Florida State.

The Northwestern-Duke and Alabama-Florida State afternoon matches were canceled due to inclement weather.

Hannah Kim provided the winning margin for the Wildcats, edging Kristen Gillman by one stroke on 18 to take the match, 2-up. Kim was 1-up through the front nine, and the two golfers matched each other stroke-for-stroke the rest of the way until 18, when Kim put the match away.

Northwestern got off to a hot start with Brooke Riley beating Cammie Gray, 5 and 4. After being all square through three, Riley scored par on the next nine holes to go 5-up on Gray. That margin held in the next two holes, and the match ended on 14.

Alabama got a 2 and 1 win in match two between Sarah Cho and Lakareber Abe, and the 'Cats and Crimson Tide halved match three with Mia Landegren and Kacie Komoto.

Janet Mao put Northwestern back on top with a 3 and 2 win over Lauren Stephenson. Mao took the lead on the ninth hole and never looked back, extending her margin to three through 16.

The Crimson Tide got a win in the fifth match, once again tying the team score and setting the stage for Kim.

Chicago's Big Ten Team next heads to Athens, Georgia, for the NCAA Regionals set to begin on Monday, May 8.
