URBANA, Ill. -- Third-seeded Northwestern handled sixth-seeded Michigan State Friday afternoon, winning 4-1 in a Big Ten tournament quarterfinal round matchup at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
With the win, the Wildcats advance to Saturday's semifinal round where they'll take on second-seeded Michigan, a 4-0 winner over Indiana on Friday.
Five days after dropping the doubles point to Michigan State in the regular-season finale between the teams, Northwestern turned the tables to surge in front. The Wildcats changed up their lineup, pairing the 60th-ranked team of Maddie Lipp and Rheeya Doshi with one another at the top spot in the lineup. The duo came up with a 6-3 win over the 40th-ranked duo of Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen.
At No. 2, the team of Alex Chatt and Lee Or won the first five games before finishing off Athena Trouillot and Samantha Memije for a 6-3 victory to put NU up 1-0 in the match.
With two matches being played indoors simultaneously due to inclement weather, only three courts were available for the 'Cats and the Spartans to begin singles play. Action began with matchups at Nos. 1, 3 and 6.
At No. 1, 79th-ranked Erin Larner barely broke a sweat against Aslina Chua as the junior notched a 6-0, 6-1 to give Northwestern a 2-0 lead in the match. Doshi was impressive as well at No. 3, rolling past Metcalf 6-3, 6-3 to bring the Wildcats within one victory of taking the match.
Michigan State managed to get on the board thanks to a victory at No. 6, but Lipp was dominant in her matchup at No. 2, defeating Erin Faulkner 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the victory for NU.
The semifinal round match between Northwesten and Michigan is slated to get underway at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Wolverines won a tight regular-season matchup between the teams, 4-2, in Ann Arbor last Friday.
