EVANSTON, Ill. – The latest student-athlete academic performancesummary reported another successful quarter in the classroom for the Northwestern athletic department.

"By every metric, our young men and women continue to make Northwestern proud in the classroom," said Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "The academic accomplishments put forth by our nearly 500 student-athletes during the winter, many of whom were in the midst of their athletic seasons, are remarkable. The culture of success created by our coaches and academic support staff is extraordinary, but the true credit belongs to our Wildcats and their consistent dedication to excellence in everything they pursue."

Wildcats student-athletes achieved a tremendous winter quarter in the classroom. Northwestern led the Big Ten Conference with a school-record 60 Academic All-Big Ten selections for the winter season. Combined with the 99 young men and women who received Academic All-Big Ten honors in the fall, the yearly total has reached 159 with the spring season well in progress. 'Cats student-athletes have taken home more than 200 total Academic All-Big Ten awards in each of the last five years.

All 19 Wildcats varsity programs posted team GPAs over 3.0 during the winter. The average team GPA for the winter quarter was a 3.33, marking the fifth-straight quarter where the Wildcats have topped the 3.30 threshold and 32nd-consecutive quarter over a 3.0. A full 77-percent of student-athletes recorded GPAs over 3.0.

Five teams turned in GPAs over 3.45 in the winter led by women's soccer at 3.6 on the heels of capturing the program's first Big Ten title on the field last fall. Volleyball (3.55), women's swimming and diving (3.527), cross country (3.49), and lacrosse (3.46) rounded out the Top-5 during the winter.

Nandi Mehta, a graduate student on the women's soccer team, earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and also was named as a finalist for the NCAA's prestigious Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship.

Both the fall and the winter were landmark quarters for Northwestern Athletics on and off the field. The football team finished with seven wins and a victory in the Pinstripe Bowl over Pittsburgh and the women's soccer team took home a share of the Big Ten title, reached the third round of the NCAA tournament, and tied the record for wins in program history.

In the winter, the men's basketball team made its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance, advanced to the second round, and set a program-record with 24 wins. Olivia Rosendahl also became the first diver in program history to win a national championship, placing first from the platform.
