
Wildcats Fall To No. 4 Ohio State

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 36 Northwestern suffered its first conference defeat of the season against No. 4 Ohio State on Sunday at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill.
The Buckeyes prevailed 7-0 in a matchup of Big Ten unbeatens. The Wildcats moved to 12-9 on the season and 8-1 in conference play, and are now third in the Big Ten behind OSU and Michigan.
Ohio State just pulled out a hotly contested doubles point after a strong effort from the 'Cats. At No. 1 in a matchup between two top-30 ranked duos, Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp could not overcome Francesa Di Lorenzo and Miho Kowase in a 6-4 defeat. The remaining two doubles sets both reached 5-5, but Erin Larner and Rheeya Doshi fell 7-5 before Brooke Rischbieth and Lee Or were downed by the same score moments later.
The Buckeyes doubled their lead in singles when Jillian Rooney fell to Olivia Sneed at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2. Chatt was beaten by No. 88 Miho Kowase at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1 to make the score 3-0 in favor in the visitors.
OSU clinched the match at 4-0 when the top-ranked player in the country, Francesca Di Lorenzo, defeated No. 122 Larner at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Both of the matches at No. 2 and No. 5 singles went to a first set tiebreak. Or dropped her tiebreak 7-3 and fell 7-6, 6-2 to #89 Sandy Niehaus at No. 5. Lipp won a tense first set tiebreak against #51 Anna Sanford 9-7, but lost the second set 6-1 before dropping a third set match-tiebreak 10-5 at No. 2
Chicago's Big Ten Team closes out the regular season next weekend with a trip to Michigan on Friday before returning home to host Michigan State on Sunday for Senior Day.
