Northwestern's All-Around Effort Leads to Fourth Straight Win

4/12/2017 10:42:00 PM | Baseball

PEORIA, Ill. — Tommy Bordignon notched a quality start with six strikeouts and Alex Erro and Joe Hoscheit each tallied a pair of RBI to help Northwestern pick up its fourth consecutive win with a 6-2 victory over Bradley on Wednesday night.

Northwestern (12-20) took advantage of offensive opportunities recording six hits, including four doubles, and stealing five bases in the effort. The loss sends Bradley to 13-17 on the campaign.

Northwestern got the scoring started early by plating a run in the top of the first inning. Jack Dunn hustled out a double before Matt Hopfner moved him over to third with a single to right field. With runners on the corners, Joe Hoscheit picked up his sixth sacrifice fly of the season with a deep ball to right to bring home Dunn and put the 'Cats up, 1-0.

Bordignon set the tone for Northwestern by retiring a nine of the first 10 batters he faced. The right-hander had a career-night throwing a career-long six innings, while matching his personal best in strikeouts with six.

The Wildcats pushed their lead to 2-0 in the top of fourth inning thanks to an RBI-single from Hoscheit that scored Hopfner who was on base after he doubled down the right field line.

Bradley scored a pair of runs in the fourth to even the score at 2-2.

Jake Schieber and Charlie Maxwell drew walks to begin the top of the seventh and Nick Pacioreck moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Erro roped a pitched down the left field line to bring home both #B1GCats and give NU a 4-2 lead.

Tyler Lass and Sam Lawrence tossed scoreless seventh and eighth innings, respectively.

Maxwell manufactured a run in the top of the ninth inning by stealing both second and third allowing Willie Bourbon to bring him home by putting the ball in play to the right side. Bourbon accounted for the Wildcats final run on a wild pitch later in the frame to make it 6-2.

Danny Katz closed the door in the ninth inning retiring three of the four batters he faced.

Northwestern returns to Big Ten play this weekend (April 14-16) with a trip down to Illinois. The Wildcats' Friday night 7 p.m. CT contest will be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network.
