SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Northwestern split its doubleheader with Santa Clara on Saturday by taking the first contest, 7-1, and dropping the nightcap, 8-1.
In game one of the day, freshman Hank Christie (1-1) made the third start of his career and went the distance, tossing a complete-game only allowing six hits and one run, while fanning four batters.
The Wildcats have not had a pitcher toss a complete game since Matt Portman went nine innings on May 2, 2015 against Nebraska.
Christie received offensive support from all nine batters in the #B1GCats lineup as every starter tallied one hit. Both Charlie Maxwell and Jack Claeys collected doubles on the afternoon, while Claeys posted a team-high two RBIs.
Jack Dunn, Matt Hopfner and Joe Hoscheit each recorded an RBI.
The victory in Saturday's opener was the Wildcats first of the season.
Game two of the twin bill did not go the Wildcats way. Matt Gannon made his second career start, but only managed two retire a pair of batter before head coach Spencer Allen decided to go to the bullpen.
Santa Clara posted five runs in the first two innings and never looked back.
Pete Hofman, who worked 4.1 innings of relief, collected a career-best six strikeouts in the effort. Cooper Wetherbee finished off the final three innings, allowing only one run and striking out a batter.
The Broncos outhit Northwestern, 13-5, and the Wildcats' lone run on the day came on an error in the second inning.
Northwestern and Santa Clara will meet for the series finale tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT. Junior Tommy Bordignon will get the start for the #B1GCats.
