Wetherbee's Outing Leads Northwestern to Shutout Victory

3/29/2017 6:00:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. — Senior Cooper Wetherbee made his second start of the season and posted a quality start, throwing seven-scoreless innings to lead Northwestern to a 2-0 shutout win over Chicago State on Wednesday afternoon at Miller Park.

The win improves the Wildcats to 6-17 on the campaign, while Chicago State falls to 6-16 overall.

The victory was Wetherbee's first of the season and second of his career. He finished with a career-best 7.0 innings pitched, while only allowing four hits and walking two of the 26 batters he faced. Sam Lawrence struck out one in one inning of relief and Nick Cauley earned the first save of his career by shutting the door in the ninth.

Connor Lind and Matt Hopfner led the way for Northwestern offensively. The duo each tallied a team-high two hits and Lind collected the game's only RBI.

Joe Hoscheit, Charlie Maxwell and Ben Dickey each recorded a hit.

Northwestern scored a run in the first two innings to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. After Matt Hopfner singled to the right side, Chicago State's Josh Willis walked three consecutive batters to bring home the game's first run. Charlie Maxwell came around to score in the second inning when he stole third base and the throw from the catcher sailed into left field.

The shutout was Northwestern's first since May 14, 2015.

Northwestern will host Air Force in a three-game set beginning on Friday, March 31. It will be Military Appreciation Weekend at Miller Park. All current and retired military members, along with their family members, will be eligible for $3 tickets.
