EVANSTON, Ill. — Head coach Spencer Allen and Northwestern baseball return to action Wednesday, March 29, for a mid-week contest with Chicago State at Miller Park. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. CT.

The Wildcats are in the midst of 12 consecutive home games at Miller Park.

Senior Cooper Wetherbee (0-1, 2.53 ERA) will make his second second start of the season on Wednesday. Wetherbee has been extremely effective in his 10.2 innings this season, only allowing one extra base hit and striking out 11 batters.

Northwestern (5-17) opened up Big Ten Conference play last weekend by dropping three games to Indiana, including a pair of games by one run. The Wildcats exploded offensively in the series against the Hoosiers, tallying 23 runs and 41 hits. Northwestern posted a season-high 17 knocks in the series finale on Sunday.

Seniors Joe Hocsheit and Matt Hopfner led the offensive effort for the 'Cats last weekend. Hoscheit boasted a .615 batting average in the three games with a team-best eight hits, six RBI and a 1.077 slugging percentage, while Hopfner recorded seven knocks, including two doubles and a triple to finish the series with a .538 batting average.

Matt Gannon was a bright spot out of the bullpen. The freshman left-hander tossed 4.1 innings of relief and held Indiana's batters to a .071 batting average, only surrendering one hit.

Freshman Alex Erro continues to pace the club at the dish, hitting .353 in his rookie campaign. Erro ranks 13th nationally, and first in the Big Ten, in the toughest to strike out category. The Miami, Florida, native has only been retired via a strikeout four times this season or once every 21.3 at-bats.

Chicago State enters the week 6-14 overall and will play at Notre Dame on Tuesday, March 28, before heading to Evanston on Wednesday. The Cougars took a series from Seattle over the weekend by winning the opener, 4-3, and the finale, 6-3.

Last season, Northwestern won both games it played against Chicago State. The Wildcats christened Rocky and Berenice Miller Park on March 30, 2016, with an 11-5 win over the Cougars. Jack Claeys hit a grand slam in the effort and Danny Katz tossed a career-high five innings to earn the first victory of his collegiate career.
