KAMPALA, Uganda — Northwestern freshman Audrey Roberts was the third-fastest member of Team USA at the 2017 IAFF Cross Country World Championships, finishing the U20 women's 6K race in 22:18 on Sunday at the Kololo Independence Grounds.
Roberts placed 56th, trailing Oklahoma State's Michelle Magnani (37th; 21:32) and Clemson's Logan Morris (45th; 21:58) from Team USA. Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey won the race with a finishing time of 18:34.
"This was such a great experience for Aubrey," said head coach 'A Havahla Haynes. "Any time you get to wear a uniform for the United States — one of the hardest uniforms to obtain in the sport of track and field — it's fantastic. She has represented Northwestern at the highest level possible in both the NCAA and the international stage."
The Eau Claire, Wisconsin, native improved upon her second-place time of 22:42 at the United States Cross Country Championships, which qualified her for this international competition. She was the fastest 'Cat in both 5K and 6K times during the 2016 cross country season, earned a Top-12 finish at the Big Ten Championships, and qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Team USA finished 12th out of 16 teams in the competition with 212 points.
Roberts now shifts her focus from the course to the track as the Wildcats begin the outdoor track season on Friday, March 31, at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
