Nia Coffey, Ashley Deary Earn All-Big Ten Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. – Nia Coffey was named First Team All-Big Ten, and Ashley Deary won Defensive Player of the Year along with earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors, the conference announced Monday afternoon. The awards were revealed live on The Women's Sports Report on Big Ten Network.
 
Coffey was selected to the Big Ten's First Team for the fourth consecutive year, the first Northwestern player ever to receive the honor four times. She was voted onto the ten-player team by both the coaches and media and was a unanimous selection by the media.
 
The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native ranks second in the Big Ten with 10.6 rebounds per game, third in the conference with 14 double-doubles and fourth in points per game with 19.5. Coffey is the all-time leader in Northwestern history with 1,167 rebounds and 489 made free throws and ranks second in program history with 2,232 points. She is on five national player of the year watch lists.
 
Deary was named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and is only the third player in conference history to win the award more than once. She also earned second-team honors from both the coaches and the media and was named to the five-person All-Defensive Team.
 
The senior from Flower Mound, Texas, is the nation's active career leader in both steals and assists. She is a top-10 finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year and ranks at the top of the Big Ten in assists (188), assists per game (6.5), steals (112) and steals per game (3.86).
 
Fellow senior Allie Tuttle received the Big Ten's Sportsmanship Award.
 
Northwestern opens the 2017 Big Ten Tournament on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT. The ninth-seeded Wildcats will play eight-seed Iowa in the second round. The winner will advance to play No. 1 seed Ohio State on Friday. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
