
Wildcats Stumble in Mule Mix Opener

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Northwestern jumped out a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Middle Tennessee answered with eight runs in the bottom of the frame to go on to beat the Wildcats, 11-4, in game one of the Mule Mix Classic.
Northwestern (0-4) finished the contest with eight hits. Freshman Alex Erro went 3-for-4 on the night with two RBIs, which came in the fourth inning on the first home run of his career. Erro also collected the first double of his career.
Middle Tennessee (2-3) exploded on the offensive end with 18 hits. The Blue Raiders had six players with multiple hits.
Joe Schindler made his second start of the season and was credited with the loss and allowing four runs in 3.2 innings of work. The righty surrendered six hits, while tallying three strikeouts. Five Northwestern pitchers saw action on Friday night.
Middle Tennessee's Jake Wyrick earned the victory after going six innings and holding the Wildcats to three runs on five hits. He fanned six Northwestern batters.
Freshmen Leo Kaplan and Kyle Burnett, Jr. each picked up the first hits of their careers. Kaplan launched a pinch-hit triple in the top of the ninth and Burnett, Jr., knocked him in with a single later in the frame.
Northwestern will return to action tomorrow to take on Belmont in game two of the Mule Mix Classic. Freshman Hank Christie will make the second start of his career with first pitch set for noon CT.
