
No. 23 Northwestern Falls to Baylor, 5-2

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 23 Northwestern won the doubles point, but Baylor rallied back to earn a 5-2 victory Friday evening at Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (4-4) outlasted the Bears through doubles action that lasted nearly an hour in taking a 1-0 lead. At No. 2, the team of Rheeya Doshi and Lee Or took care of business by earning a 6-3 win over Jessica Hinojosa and Angie Shakhraichuk. However, the other two matches both went to a decisive tiebreaker.
Northwestern's 15th-ranked duo of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp surged out to a 4-1 lead at No. 1 over the ninth-ranked team of Elizabeth Profit and Blair Shankle. The Bears' pairing eventually rallied back to take a 5-4 lead before the teams eventually went to a tiebreaker. NU's team earned the minor upset by winning the tiebreaker, 7-5, giving the hosts the lead going into singles play.
The close battles carried on to singles action where the first set was decided by two games in five of the six matches. Baylor players captured the first set in four of the matches, leaving the Wildcats with some work to do.
Northwestern had a tough time breaking the Bears' momentum, though, as Baylor got wins at Nos. 6, 2, 3 and 4 to clinch the match win.
The teams played out the third sets in the remaining two matches at Nos. 1 and 5.
Ranked No. 110, Lee Or worked hard to earn a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Jessica Hinojosa in the match at No. 5. In the final match of the night to finish, Erin Larner gave Shankle, the ninth-ranked player in the nation, all she could handle. The Northwestern junior held a 5-3 lead in the decisive set but wasn't quite able to hold on, falling 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Northwestern returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when it hosts Illinois to open Big Ten Conference play.
