Northwestern Battles Arizona State to the Final Pitch

PHOENIX — Northwestern loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning, trailing Arizona State by three runs, but was not able to complete the comeback in the season opener and fell to the Sun Devils, 3-1, Friday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader.
With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the ninth inning, Jack Claeys walked to bring across NU's lone run. Arizona's Satate's Chaz Montoya was able to strike out Jake Schieber and Nick Paciorek in the next two at bats to help ASU hold on for the win.
Northwestern (0-1) tallied one run on three hits and had no errors in the 2017 lidlifter. Matt Hopfner, Joe Hoscheit and Nick Paciorek recorded knocks for the #B1GCats. Hoscheit's double in the second inning was the lone extra-base hit for NU.
Joe Schindler got the start for the Wildcats and went 5.1 innings, striking out four batters and only allowing two runs in the loss. Pete Hofman and Josh Davis each worked 1.1 innings of relief and faced five batter a piece. Hofman struck out three batters.
Arizona State (1-0) racked up nine hits with Andrew Snow and Lyle Lin each picking up two knocks. Lin had a game-high two RBIs. E Lingos picked up the win after going 6.2 innings and striking out six batters and Chaz Montoya earned his first save of the season.
The Wildcats left eight runners on base.
Game two of the series will take the place at 7:30 p.m. CT. Freshman Hank Christie will make the first start of his collegiate career.
