PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Northwestern finished the regular season with a 28-6 loss at No. 13 Rutgers on Sunday. The Wildcats split the final weekend after a 23-16 win at Maryland on Friday.
The Wildcats end the 2016-17 regular dual season with a 7-8 record, a five-match improvement over last season. That improvement is the largest from one season to the next since 2010-11, when Northwestern was plus-12 from the 2009-10 season.
Johnny Sebastian got the 'Cats on the board with a 14-2 major decision at 165 lbs. coming out of intermission. He cruised in the third period to rack up the final margin over Anthony Pafumi. Sebastian was making his return to his home state of New Jersey and improved to 16-6 on the year with the win.
Senior Jacob Berkowitz then got a win in the final Big Ten dual match of his career. He beat Matthew Correnti, 5-3, at 197 lbs. following a frenetic third period finish that saw Berkowitz get the winning takedown despite a Rutgers' challenge with just seconds remaining. Berkowitz is now 22-7 this season.
Northwestern will await the teams announced for the National Duals coming up next weekend.
The Big Ten Championships will take place March 4-5 at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind.
