EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's women's tennis team will embark on what should prove to be a memorable training trip in late December when it travels to Australia.
The Wildcats will depart Chicago for their journey Dec. 26 and will return Jan. 7.
"We need to say thanks to a lot of people for making our first foreign tour a reality," said Northwestern head coach Claire Pollard. "(Volunteer assistant coach) Dané Vorster is a the mastermind behind the event and generous contributions from the Carlson Family Foundation, the ConantLeadership and many alums and fans have made it possible for us to go to Australia. We are thrilled to give this opportunity to our amazing student-athletes and look forward to the impetus it will give us for the team season."
The trip is an opportunity for the program to compete against some of Australia's top tennis players while visiting the cities of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
Along the way, the Wildcats will have the opportunity to tour Melbourne Park, the venue that is home to the Australian Open. The team will practice on grass, clay and hardcourts while doing fitness training, experiencing team bonding activities and exploring a variety of things such as beaches and islands during Australia's summertime.
"Looking forward to 2018, our seniors have some unfinished business," said Northwestern senior Maddie Lipp. "Training with each other in Australia, right before our season begins, is a huge advantage for the team and we are extremely grateful for the opportunity. I'm excited to soak up the Australian sun!"
Northwestern opens its dual match season Jan. 20 when it hosts both Ball State and Saint Louis.
