LOS ANGELES β Northwestern took No. 2 seed UCLA to overtime but fell 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 on the Bruins' home field Friday night.
Β
The Wildcats (12-8-3) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season. Head coach Michael Moynihan's squad has also posted double-digit wins in each of the last three years.
Β
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem made a career high 12 saves in her final collegiate game. She will go down as one of the best goalkeepers in NCAA history, finishing her career ranked third all-time with 48 shutouts.
Β
Fellow seniors Mackenzie Howe, Kassidy Gorman, Maria Fayeulle, Kim Jerantowski, and Grace Orndorff saw their program-changing careers at Northwestern come to an end as well.
Β
The Wildcats went 3-14-2 the year before this senior class arrived in Evanston. Northwestern has gone 51-25-13 over the four years since.
Β
Chicago's Big Ten Team held the No. 2 seed in the tournament, and the No. 4 ranked team in the country, scoreless for 90 minutes to force overtime. UCLA entered the contest sixth in the country in goals per game.
Β
In the third minute of overtime, UCLA's Anika Rodriguez broke through the NU backline and put a ball to the lower left corner of the goal that just barely got by Clem's diving effort.
Β
Northwestern ends the 2017 season with 11 shutouts, the second-most in a single season in program history. The Wildcats finished second in the Big Ten regular season and as runner-ups in the Big Ten Tournament.
