LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Aubrey Roberts posted a 20:25.07 result Saturday in the premier event in the jewel of the fall cross country schedule, the NCAA Championships hosted at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park. Roberts' time was good for 63rd place in the field of 255 of the nation's finest collegiate runners.

"It was a good day for us," said head coach 'AHavahlah Haynes. "Maybe not the result we were hoping for, but still a good day. Any time you have an opportunity to compete at the NCAA Championships you are aiming to earn an All-America finish. So in that respect, Aubrey came up a bit short, but certainly not for lack of effort. She is the first back-to-back NCAA qualifier in our program's history, is one of our highest performing individuals at the event, and was the seventh competitor to cross the line from the B1G. We are incredibly proud of how she has performed this season, especially in her leadership, and how hungry she is the future with the 2018 team."
Saturday marked Roberts' second consecutive appearance in the final event of the fall, earned with a Top-4 finish at NCAA Regionals. The day began earlier than originally scheduled thanks to inclement weather moving through the Louisville area.
The NCAA Championships field consisted of 31 qualifying teams, comprised of 18 automatic qualifiers and 13 at-large selections. In addition to the teams, 38 runners qualified individually for the event. This marked the third time that Sawyer Park has hosted the championship meet, following previous events in 2012 and 2015.
The race brought the 2017 cross country slate to an end for the Wildcats, one that displayed significant growth up and down the roster.
"This was a really productive season for our program," Haynes reflected. "The overarching goal was to put ourselves in a position to qualify for nationals, but we had a season chalk-full of personal bests and we were healthy throughout. Haley Albers had a personal best of more than 90-seconds, Sara Coffey had a personal best of over 60-seconds, Andi Ostenso had her best season in over 2 years. Isabel Seidel earned her highest placement at NCAA Regionals and also ran a 45-second personal best. Sarah Nicholson was a solid number 2 for us all season, and made a direct impact on the consistency of the team. Our two rookies, Hannah Tobin and Mandy Davis did an awesome job stepping up in big competition and contributing to our eighth-place finish at Big Tens. When we look at it and say well we didn't make Nationals, the small details along the way are what really make this a special season and show that this team is moving in the right direction."
With the XC season behind them, the Wildcats will compete in a full array of track events throughout the rest of the 2017-18 year. The indoor track schedule will begin on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Boston University Season Opener in Massachusetts.
