EVANSTON, Ill. – Following a strong performance last weekend at the Cowboy Jamboree, Northwestern women's cross country team improved to No. 5 in the USTFCCA Midwest Region, the program's top ranking since 2013.
The Wildcats improved four spots in the rankings from last week after finishing fifth at the event in Stillwater, Okla. The team finished just behind Missouri and Oklahoma State, who were NCAA Championships qualifiers out of the Midwest region in 2016.
"To be ranked in the top five is a step in the right direction," head coach 'A Havahla Haynes said. "The progress is a testament to the work that our women put in over the summer maintaining mileage and the myriad of other components to remain healthy to this point."
Senior Andrea Ostenso is the only Wildcat remaining on the roster who was on the team in 2013. The 'Cats reached the No. 5 spot in the Midwest in the third week of the campaign after finishing third at the UW-Parkside Midwest Opener.
Northwestern is back in action for the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Ky. on Oct. 14.
"The goal is to maintain if not improve upon this position after we head to Pre-Nationals in Louisville, when we will see a higher and deeper level of competition." Coach Haynes said.
Last year at the 6K Pre-National held in Terre Haute, Ind. then-first year Aubrey Roberts finished in the top-50 with a 20:53.9. Roberts already has run a 20:47.6 in the 6K this season, which she posted at the Cowboy Jamboree.
