Kim followed up an opening round 66, the second-best round in team history, with a 1-under 70 on Tuesday. The senior has a four-shot advantage on the rest of the field at 6-under after 36 holes. She is seeking the fourth individual title of her career, aiming to add to a trophy case that includes a pair of Hurricane Invitational crowns and a Silverado Showdown championship.

Janet Mao carded the best round of her collegiate career, and the best loop of anyone in the field on Tuesday, with a 3-under 68. She birdied the 160-yard, Par-3 No. 6, the 152-yard, Par-3 No. 8, and the 357-yard, Par-4 No. 14, to go along with 15 birdies in a spectacular round to rocket 41 spots up the leaderboard, the biggest jump of the day.

Senior Sarah Cho finished with a flourish, recording four birdies over her final eight holes of the day, including Nos. 17&18, to card an even-par 71 and move into the Top-15. Sophomore Brooke Riley played her last ten holes at 2-under to post an identical 71.

The Wildcats 280 marked the lowest team score of the day by six strokes, and the fifth-best single tournament round in program history. Northwestern jumped four spots up the leaderboard and opened up an eight-shot cushion on fourth-place California and Washington. The 'Cats will tee off Wednesday's final round paired with UCLA and Stanford, just two shots back of the Bruins and within striking distance of the host Cardinal.

Northwestern – 3/15 • 296-280-R3 = 576 (+8)
1 – Hannah Kim -- 66-70-R3 = 136 (-6)
T14 – Sarah Cho -- 74-71-R3 = 145 (+3)
T29 – Janet Mao – 80-68-R3 = 148 (+6)
T39 – Brooke Riley -- 78-71-R3 = 149 (+7)
T53 – Stephanie Lau – 78-74-R3 = 152 (+10)

The 54-hole event is hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice, the Thomas & Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at Stanford's Hoover Institution. Dr. Rice served as U.S. Secretary of State from 2005-09 and is an avid golfer. The tournament is being held at Poppy Hills for the first time while renovation is being done at Stanford Golf Course.

The field includes fourteen schools and 15 teams. Based on the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, they are: No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Stanford, No. 13 NORTHWESTERN, No. 22 Iowa State, No. 23 Florida State, No. 35 Washington, No. 36 Pepperdine, No. 44 San Jose State, No. 48 Oregon, No. 50 Cal, No. 75 Georgia, No. 90 UC Davis, No. 110 Cal Poly.

Located on the famed Monterey Peninsula in the Del Monte Forest, Poppy Hills Golf Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1986. It is home of the Northern California Golf Association and is the first course in the country to be owned and operated by an amateur golf association.

The challenging layout is situated high above Pebble Beach Golf Links and features rolling terrain as the holes meander through majestic Monterey pines and cypress trees. Large, undulating greens put a premium on club selection and distance control, and there are many risk-and-reward holes. Poppy Hills offers scenic views of the Pacific Ocean. From 1991-2009, the course hosted the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and was also site of the 1991 NCAA Men's Championships. A 13-month, $10 million course renovation was completed in 2014.
