Defense Dominates as NU Sets Program Record in Win Over Indiana

9/15/2016 9:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern defense stole the show on Thursday night at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium as the Wildcats topped Indiana in their Big Ten opener, 1-0, to remain undefeated this season.

BIG TEN NETWORK - HIGHLIGHTS

Sophomore Brenna Lovera scored the winner in the 13th minute for her team-best fifth goal of the season. At the conclusion of the game, junior Lauren Clem and the Wildcats went 536:39 minutes without conceding a goal to set a program record. The record, previously set by Wendy Scholz in 1997, was broken in the 55th minute of action.

Clem extended her career shutout tally to 29, an active Wildcat record, and registered a season-high five saves.

The Wildcats first chance on frame came in the eighth minute when sophomore Marisa Viggiano sent a ball to the top of the box to a waiting Kim Jerantowski. The junior fired a one-touch strike in an attempt to break the deadlock, but Indiana keeper Sara L'Hommedieu picked up her first save of the game.

In the 13th minute of play, Northwestern drew a foul to set up a penalty kick for Lovera. Her initial attempt was saved, but the sophomore picked up the rebound and tapped in what proved to be the game-winning goal for Chicago's Big Ten Team.

Lovera continued to pressure the Hoosiers' defense when she accepted a through ball from freshmen Maddy Lucas before shaking off a pair of defenders to go one-on-one with L'Hommedieu. Her attempt could not pick out a corner as the Indiana keeper collected her second save.

Indiana's most dangerous look came early in the second half. Julia De Angelis broke free on a through ball but Clem knocked it away. The Indiana striker picked up the rebound as the 'Cats defense scrambled to get back, but Clem heroically charged De Angelis and made her most aggressive save of the match.

The rest of the second half was a scrappy affair, but neither side could create quality chances.

Northwestern closed out the game safely and continued its best-ever start to the season with eight-straight wins. The 'Cats close out their six-game homestand against Purdue on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT on BTN.
