EVANSTON, Ill. -- Former Northwestern men's golf standout Mike Finster qualified for the 2016 U.S. Senior Open Championships on Aug. 11-14 at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.

The U.S. Senior Open is a 72-hole competition. A field of 156 players will play 18 holes of stroke play on Thursday and Friday. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the 60 lowest scorers and ties.

Finster was one of three amateurs to play all 72 holes in his first U.S. Senior Open last year, placing 71st at Del Paso Country Club. In 2016, he earned one of two qualifying spots at the Belleair, Fla., sectional. Finster shot 2-under 70 to qualify, beating former Tour players Lee Rinker and Gary Koch.

Sectional qualifying, played over 18 holes, was conducted at 34 sites around the country between June 14 and July 11.

Finster, who graduated from Northwestern in 1987, played professionally following his collegiate career at NU and made an appearance on the Japanese Tour in 1991. He will tee off at 1:45 p.m. on Aug. 11.
