EVANSTON, Ill. – Austin Brobst has joined the Northwestern cross country staff as an assistant coach, head coach 'AHavahla Haynes announced Tuesday.
"Austin brings an expertise in mid-distance training, elite competition and recruiting," said Haynes. "He is true a student of the sport and brings a level of competitiveness that will facilitate laying our foundation for a world class student-athlete experience."
Brobst joins the Wildcats after serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of New Mexico, working with the horizontal jumpers, sprinters, short hurdlers and mid-distance runners. During his tenure in Albuquerque the Lobos produced an NCAA champion in men's long jump, eight All-Americans, six Mountain West Team Titles (four men's and two women's), and countless Mountain West Conference Champions and All-Conference Award Winners.
Brobst attended and competed for (2003-08) the University of New Mexico in the horizontal jumps and short sprints. After earning his undergraduate degree, he worked as a graduate assistant at UNM coaching those same disciplines. Upon earning his Master's in 2010, Austin left New Mexico for a position at San Francisco's Academy of Art University, working with all field events, before returning for his second stint in Albuquerque.
Northwestern cross country opens the 2016 season on Sept. 2 at the Illinois Dual in Champaign.
