CHICAGO — The Chicago Fire announced Tuesday afternoon that Northwestern University men's soccer alumnus Joey Calistri has been selected by Major League Soccer Homegrown head coach Landon Donovan to the 20-man roster for the 2016 Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California.
Calistri and the young MLS team will face the Mexican Under-20 National Team in the third annual Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game on Wednesday, July 27 at 8 p.m. CT.
The rookie forward signed a homegrown contract with the Fire on Dec. 17, 2015, and has made 10 league appearances, including two starts, tallying a goal and an assist.
During his time at Northwestern, Calistri became the first player in program history to earn four All-Big Ten honors. He was named the unanimous Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2012 and went on to become the program's second leading scorer with 30 career goals. The Deerfield, Illinois, native was also a three-time NSCAA All-Great Lakes Team selection.
Last month, Calistri was named Northwestern's 2015-16 recipient of the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor, recognizing academic and athletic excellence.
Northwestern will begin its 2016 campaign with a three-game preseason trip to Pomona, New Jersey (Aug. 13-19), before playing its season opener on Aug. 26 against Florida Gulf Coast at the new Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.
