DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball has announced that Northwestern University head coach Spencer Allen will be at the helm of one of its teams at the 2016 Tournament of Stars, presented by Major League Baseball.

"This is truly a great honor," said Allen. "To be asked to coach the best and brightest that our sport has to offer, while representing my country, my family and Northwestern University, is an opportunity that I feel blessed to have been afforded."

The tournament, which will take place at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., from June 21-26, is used to evaluate and identify athletes to be invited to the USA Baseball 18U National Team Trials in September.

The Tournament of Stars will divide 108 of the nation's best ballplayers who are eligible for the 18U National Team into six teams of 18 players, and each team will be led by a manager, assistant coach and pitching coach.

Allen will serve as the manager of the Pride team and be assisted by former Washington Nationals coach Mark Weidemaier and pitching coach Jim Wladyka.

Select games will be broadcast live online at USABaseball.com and MLB.com by Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM).

Participants in the event form the primary pool of talent from which USA Baseball will select its team to compete in the 2016 COPABE Pan Am "AAA" Championships to be played from September 23 to October 2 in Monterrey, Mexico.

The 18U National Team is the defending - and three time - champion of the COPABE Pan Am "AAA" Championships, winning a gold medals 2009, 2011 and 2014.
