EVANSTON, Ill. – Five Wildcats golfers have earned Academic All-Big Ten distinction for the spring of 2016, the Conference announced on Wednesday. Northwestern achieved a school-record number of Academic All-Big Ten awards for the third-straight season, amassing 232 during the 2015-16 academic year.

With 87 Wildcats earning spring and at-large Academic All-Big Ten awards as announced by the conference office Wednesday, NU's year-long total is north of the 200 mark for the sixth-straight season. Northwestern won 103 accolades in the fall and 42 in the winter; women's fencing, which competes in the Midwest Fencing Conference, is honored in the spring with at-large Academic All-Big Ten awards.

To be eligible for an Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a 3.0 cumulative GPA or above.

"Establishing yet another school record for Academic All-Big Ten awards is a fitting end to an amazing 2015-16 in the classroom," said Jim Phillips, vice president for athletics and recreation. "This year Northwestern student-athletes achieved their highest overall quarterly GPA on record with a 3.31 during the winter, earned 12 NCAA Academic Progress Rate Public Recognition awards and led the Big Ten with a 97 percent Graduation Success Rate, eight points higher than anyone else in the conference.

"The entire Wildcats community is incredibly proud of these student-athletes, especially our seniors who are about to become Northwestern graduates."

The conference office also will present the Distinguished Scholar Award in July. Qualifying students must be in at least their second year at their institution while earning at least a 3.7 GPA for the 2015-16  academic year.
