EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern's women's tennis team is headed to the NCAA tournament for the 18th straight season the NCAA announced Tuesday.
The 30th-ranked Wildcats (13-10) are making their 27th overall appearance in the tourney field and will face 42nd-ranked Ole Miss (13-11) in a first-round matchup Friday, May 13 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The winner of the contest faces the winner of the match between host and third-seeded North Carolina and ETSU with a spot in the Round of 16 on the line.
The first and second rounds will be played May 13-15 at 16 regional sites around the country. The final four rounds are set for May 19-24 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Northwestern has qualified for the national tournament in every season dating back to 1999, when head coach Claire Pollard took over the program. The Wildcats have advanced to at least the Round of 16 12 times during the current stretch. NU has played in the national quarterfinals three times.
The Wildcats are led by redshirt sophomore Maddie Lipp who is ranked No. 50 in the nation in singles by the ITA, while sophomore Erin Larner is No. 102. In doubles play, the team of Lipp and Alex Chatt boasts a No. 22 national ranking. Larner has a No. 54 ranking when paired with senior Alicia Barnett.
Northwestern has faced one of the toughest schedules in the nation to date. All 10 of the team's nonconference dual matches were against ranked opponents, including wins over Arizona State and Georgia Tech. The Wildcats have defeated six ranked foes overall this season, including a victory over then-No. 10 Michigan on April 22.
NU went 10-1 in Big Ten play to earn a second-place finish.
Ole Miss holds a slim 3-2 edge in the all-time series with Northwestern. The two schools haven't met in dual match competition since a 5-2 victory by the Wildcats over the fifth-ranked Rebels at the National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, on Feb. 18, 2000.
