Lipp Recognized as Big Ten Athlete of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern redshirt sophomore Maddie Lipp (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) has been honored as the Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week the Conferene office announced Tuesday.
It is the second such award for Lipp in her career and this season. She previously earned the recognition on Jan. 19.
Lipp picked up this week's honor based upon her efforts in Northwestern's wins over then-No. 10 Michigan on Friday and Michigan State on Sunday.
She was the hero of Friday's match against the Wolverines. With the match tied 3-3, Lipp trailed Brienne Minor 4-1 in the third set of their match at No. 2 singles that would determine the match's winner. Despite the deficit, the Wildcat rallied back to win the next five games to give Northwestern a 4-3 win, ending Michigan's 37-match Big Ten regular-season winning streak in the process. The loss prevented the Wolverines from winning a share of this season's conference regular-season title.
Earlier in the match, Lipp had helped the 'Cats get off to a good start as she teamed with Alex Chatt for a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. NU's 28th-ranked team took down the 41st-ranked duo of Minor and Kate Fahey.
In Sunday's 6-1 win at Michigan State, Lipp was a double-winner once again. She and Chatt took down another ranked opponent as they topped 60th-ranked Allie Baer and Erin Faulkner, 7-5. Lipp then rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Lexi Baylis to help Northwestern finish its conference season with a 10-1 mark.
Lipp is ranked No. 50 in the nation in singles this week according to the ITA and holds a No. 22 doubles ranking with Chatt.
Northwestern (12-9) is ranked No. 30 in the nation this week and is the No. 2 seed for this week's Big Ten tournament which gets underway Thursday in East Lansing, Michigan. The Wildcats have an opening-round bye and will take on the winner of Thursday's contest between seventh-seeded Indiana and 10th-seeded Michigan State at 1 p.m. Central time Friday.
